Xylitol
Xylitol has been used worldwide in foods for over 40 years. It received FDA approval as a food additive in 1963. Xylitol is the main ingredient in Ideal® No Calorie Sweetener. Many research organizations--including the British Medical Journal and the World Health Organization--have acknowledged considerable health benefits from using xylitol.

Everyone Can Benefit from Using Xylitol
Xylitol is a naturally occurring 5-carbon sugar alcohol. It is found in many fruits and vegetables and is even produced by the human body as part of the normal metabolism of glucose. With a low glycemic index, xylitol is a great alternative for people with diabetes as it is metabolized independently of insulin. Xylitol does not cause the sharp increase in blood sugar levels or the associated serum insulin response, which is usually seen following consumption of other carbohydrates. Thus, xylitol can be recommended as a sugar-free sweetener suitable for people with diabetes as well as for the general population seeking a healthier lifestyle.
Xylitol is also known for its dental benefits*. Xylitol inhibits the growth of the bacteria that can cause cavities. These bacteria (streptococcus mutans) cannot make use of xylitol to grow. Over time with enough xylitol use, the quality of the bacteria in the mouth changes and fewer decay-causing bacteria survive on tooth surfaces. Less plaque forms and the level of acids attacking the tooth surface is lowered. Ideal® has not yet been tested for its level of cavity-reducing benefits.
